About the project: "DGIM - Commemoration and Remembrance"

The board of directors of the German Society of Internal Medicine (DGIM) mandated the historians Professor Dr. Hans-Georg Hofer and Associate Professor Dr. Ralf Forsbach (both University of Münster) with researching the history of the DGIM.

The aim was to investigate not only the role of the DGIM and its members during the Nazi era, but also the main lines of confrontation with National Socialism and the development of the specialist society after 1945. The project was considered difficult from the outset, as the DGIM does not have its own archives and are only a few historical documents could be preserved at the office. Public and private archives in Germany and abroad had to fill this gap.

Results could soon be presented. On the occasion of the 121st annual meeting of the German Society of Internal Medicine (DGIM), an exhibition was opened in Mannheim in April 2015 by the president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, the internist Dr. Josef Schuster: "Die Deutsche Gesellschaft für Innere Medizin in der NS-Zeit". A catalog that addressed persecution, crime, and opposition accompanied the exhibition.

In March 2018, a comprehensive scientific study was then presented: "Internisten in Diktatur und junger Demokratie. Die Deutsche Gesellschaft für Innere Medizin 1933-1970".

The partially shocking results of the research led to the decision of the board of the DGIM to enable a scientifically sound commemoration on the Internet. Those forced into emigration, those affected by persecution, terror and medical crimes, are to be presented here. The flexible medium of the Internet makes it possible to publish new findings quickly, thanks also to notifications from users.

In addition to commemoration, the focus is on those who bore responsibility for suffering, injustice and crime. The perpetrators' biographies are not concealed.
